Outside London
HEART OF ENGLAND
The very heart of Britain captures the very essence of Englishness. It's majestic yet unassuming, its countryside and traditions are old and quirky, yet its cities are vibrant and cosmopolitan.
CHESTERFIELD
Chesterfield is a thriving market town on the edge of the Peak National Park. It was first settled by the Romans. Its most notable feature is the twisted parish tower built in the 14th century. Chesterfield open air market was first held in the 12th century and is one of the largest in England.
Day Visits to:
- York, one of the most beautiful cities in Britain.
- Leeds Royal Armouries, exhibiting 2,000 years of body armour
- The underground exploration of Caphouse coal mines
- A guided tour of the lead mines of the Heights of Abraham
- National Tramway Museum at Crich
- Alton Towers, the largest funfair in Britain.
NORTHAMPTON
This spacious town is very conveniently placed within reach of many of England's major tourist attractions. London is also on a direct route from Dover and therefore can be visited on both the first and last days of a visit.
The two great medieval seats for learning, Oxford and Cambridge lie nearby as well as Shakespeare's birthplace at Stratford-on-Avon and the magnificent medieval castle of Warwick.
Immensely popular with school groups is the Cadbury's chocolate factory and Alton Towers, the most exciting, nail biting, adventurous funfair in Britain. The Black Country Museum at Dudley is a living tribute to Industrial Britain. Faithfully restored homes are brought to life by local characters dressed in period costumes and the pub, factory and chapel cluster together in the village.
OXFORD AREA (Abingdon & Headington)
This ancient university city is both timeless and modern, its 'dreaming spires' and tranquil college quadrangles coexisting with lively arts venues, bustling shops and fashionable restaurants.
